Global Climate Change and Energy Campaign

All of Tuleyome's work protecting the wild and agricultural heritage of the Putah & Cache Creek watersheds won't matter if large-scale climate change destroys the regional ecosystem. For that reason (among others) Tuleyome is joining the world-wide campaign to reduce humanity's impact on the climate.

What You Can Do...

  1. Watch An Inconvenient Truth to get motivated.
  2. Vote for candidates who will do everything in their power to stop global warming.
  3. Vote with your wallet by buying from companies that have good environmental records (buy a copy of Better World Shopper at the Co-op).
  4. Write letters to politicians and companies to tell them how you feel.
  5. Join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March (see www.stopglobalwarming.org).
  6. Buy shade grown coffee. Shade grown coffee is a way to grow coffee without cutting down the surrounding trees and vegetation. By buying shade-grown coffee you will save the habitat of thousands of birds and other animals.
  7. STOP your junk mail. It's great to recycle, but it's better to never get the stuff. One household alone would save more than 5 trees a year by stopping their junk mail, and think how much more room you'd have in your mail box! To learn how, check out www.stopjunkmail.org!
  8. Buy 100% recycled paper products and save trees. Get your businesses to do the same. If every U.S. household replaced just one box of tissues for one box of 100% recycled tissues, it would save up to 163,000 trees!
  9. Don't buy products with a lot of packaging! Making that packaging creates methane and carbon dioxide. Let the companies know why you aren't buying their product.
  10. Buy biodegradable products such as plates, utensils and bags because they break down back into the soil and decrease the size of our landfills.
  11. Recycle your cans and bottles so they don't go to the dump where they will never break down.
  12. Plant lots of plants inside and out. Air-cleaning plants like ficus help the environment and create more oxygen to fight off carbon dioxide. One tree will absorb about one ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime!
  13. Go meatless one more day a week than you do now. By doing so you will save 84,000 gallons of water, 245 lbs. of grain and 7,700 sq. ft. of rainforest!
  14. If you wash your car or dog at your house use only bio earth friendly products. The water that runs down your driveway or soaks into your lawn ends up in the storm drain that in turn ends up in our rivers, lakes and oceans.
  15. When buying products delivered in plastic, look to make sure it's a #1 or #2, so that they are recyclable here in Davis. #3-#7 can be brought to the Yolo County Landfill for recycling.
  16. Go organic! Pesticides pollute our waterways and take energy to produce.
  17. Change to compact fluorescent light bulbs and save 300 lbs. of CO2 a year.
  18. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and save 250 lbs. of CO2 per year.
  19. Check your car's and your house's air filter monthly.
  20. Don't run your dishwasher until it's full.
  21. Use cold water whenever possible. Keep your water heater no hotter than 120 degrees.
  22. Buy produce locally and save on all the pollution caused by shipping. Better yet, grow your own produce.
  23. Carpool and make new friends! Better yet, walk, bike, scooter.
  24. Group your errands into a single run.
  25. Insulate! Your home, your water heater, etc.
  26. Unplug anything you're not using.
  27. Don't idle your car when waiting to pick up your kids. Turn the car off.
  28. Bring cloth bags to the grocery store/farmer's market.
  29. Compost! Davis Waste Removal offers free composting bins and classes.
  30. Spread the word.
