Our Successes
|
|
- SUCCESS - Thompson Wilderness Bill: Introduced by Congressman Mike Thompson (D-St Helena), the bill designates more than 273,000 acres of Northern California as wilderness, along with 51,000 acres to be designated as a recreation management area for off-highway vehicles and mountain bikes.
- SUCCESS! - Lake Berryessa: Created by the construction of Monticello Dam on Putah Creek in the 1950's, concessionaires at the lake established private vacation sites in the 1960's. Current policies now prohibit this type of exclusive use. As part of a larger coalition, Tuleyome was successful in getting the Bureau of Reclamations to adopt a new plan for Lake Berryessa which will open the lake to the public, including a 150-mile lakeside hiking trail.
- SUCCESS! - Cache Creek Wild & Scenic River: With the invaluable help of Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis), Tuleyome has succeed in preserving the public lands along Cache Creek in Yolo, Napa, Lake, and Colusa counties! Cache Creek Wild has now shifted from preservation to conservation, with our next action to rid the wild and scenic 'wilderness run' of invasive Tamarisk and Arundo using volunteer kayak crews. Please Join Us!
- SUCCESS! - Berryessa Peak: Completely encircled by private land, no one has been able to visit Berryessa Peak for decades. With Tuleyome's purchase of the Ireland Ranch, docent-led hikes will finally allow members of the public and the scientific community to visit this wonderful, 9,100-acre wilderness area (Hikes are tentatively scheduled to begin this Fall).
- SUCCESS! - BLM Ukiah Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP): Working with innumberable other enviromental groups, Tuleyome successfully lobbied the Bureau of Land Management to revise its proposed Racreation Area Management Plan to remove many potentially harmful clauses Of significant importance was the elimination of wind turbines from Walker Ridge, a highly sensitive area, where the turbines would represent a significant threat to endangered birds.

Campaigns

- Blue Ridge Berryessa National Conservation Area:
Tuleyome is working on a proposal to designate the Blue Ridge Berryessa National Conservation Area (BRB NCA). The boundaries would approximate the Blue Ridge Berryessa Natural Area (BRBNA) region, but the exact size and area are yet to be determined. However, our vision encompasses potentially as much as 800,000 acres – a largely undeveloped and diverse mosaic of public and private land.
- Global Warming/Climate Change: All of Tuleyome's work protecting the wild and agricultural heritage of the Putah & Cache Creek watersheds won't matter if large-scale climate change destroys the regional ecosystem. For that reason (among others) Tuleyome is joining the world-wide campaign to reduce humanity's impact on the climate.

Projects
|
|
- Bear Creek Unit: On the BLM Bear Creek Unit, Tuleyome is working with rancher Chet Vogt to use intensive, short duration, rotational cattle grazing to control invasive species and help native plants re-naturalize on the parcel.
- Blue Ridge Conservancy: The Blue Ridge Conservancy is Tuleyome's land trust and conservation easement program. The Ireland Ranch is Tuleyome's first permanent preserve as part of the Conservancy.
- Cache Creek Weed Eradication: With Tuleyome's success in preserving Cache Creek as a Wild & Scenic River, we've now switched to conservation, specifically to the control of invasive Tamarisk and Arundo. We'll be using volunteer kayak crews to float down the river, removing these invasive species as we go. We're always looking for more help, so please join us!

Programs
|
|
- Ireland Ranch: Tuleyome is developing a management plan for the recently purchased Ireland Ranch, including docent-led hikes of the ranch, access to the Berryessa Peak Wilderness Area for scientific research, as well as recreational, agricultural and cultural studies.
- Capay Valley Hiking Club (YoloHiker): One of Tuleyome's most successful programs, the Capay Valley Hiking Club has been providing guided outings to the backcountry of the Putah and Cache Creek Watersheds since 1999.
Why not become a YoloHiker yourself!
- Teen Rafting: In partnership with the Collings West Sacramento Teen Center and the Woodland YMCA, each year Tuleyome organizes a series of river rafting trips for Yolo County teens, who otherwise would never have the opportunity to enjoy the experience. This the second year Tuleyome has organized the trips, and thus far they have been a great success.
