Photography at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge will be teeming with migratory birds in November and will offer great photo opportunities. On Saturday, November 12, Tuleyome’s very own Certified California Naturalist, Mary Hanson, will lead us on an auto tour of the refuge! This tour will be VERY slow pace (around 2 MPH) and will take about 4 to 5 hours. This is the best way to see the most birds. There are designated turnouts along the way but participants will otherwise be unable to leave their vehicle. A large viewing platform (with a small outhouse) provides a place to eat lunch about halfway through the tour. Please note that there is no running water. After the tour, feel free to stay and enjoy some of the walking trails or Visitor Center.

Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It is located about 70 miles north of the metropolitan area of Sacramento and 7 miles south of the town of Willows in Glenn and Colusa Counties. The refuge consists of 10,819 acres primarily of wetlands, with some grasslands and riparian habitats.

Hopefully Mother Nature will be nice this year and provide plenty of water for the numerous ducks and geese. Be sure to bring binoculars, cameras, lunch/snacks and water. There is a $6 fee per vehicle to enter the refuge (or $12 for a yearly pass).

All participants also understand that photographs will be taken at the event. If you do not wish to be photographed, you must tell the photographer and avoid the cameras’ line of sight.

A $5 donation to Tuleyome is requested, but is not required to attend the event.
