Vernal pool habitats are centered around ephemeral pools of water that form during the rainy season and dry up by early summer. These habitats are home to a wide range of rare and unique plants and animals. Once common in the Central Valley, less than 10% of the original vernal pool habitat now remains.
Our August Nature and You speaker is volunteer Tuleyome Board Member Shannon Hickey, a botanist and wetland ecologist who has worked on vernal pool ecosystems for many years. In her talk, Shannon will discuss what makes vernal pool ecosystems magical, how they developed in the Central Valley, where to see vernal pools today, what threats face vernal pools, and what can be done to protect them through activism and restoration.
