A busy April for K-12 field trips

Stonegate Elementary 1st graders at Conaway Ranch
April was a busy month for our K-12 field trip program – we led 7 field trips to Woodland Regional Park Preserve and 4 field trips to Conaway Ranch. These trips served 450 students across 19 classes from 8 different schools! The students ranged in grade level from kindergarten to 5th grade and came to us from 4 different school districts – Davis, Washington (West Sacramento), Winters, and Woodland.
Here are some highlights from this month’s field trips:
1. Sun Trail – shelter building at Woodland Regional Park Preserve

1st graders from Waggoner Elementary in Winters work together to build sun shelters with their parents during a field trip to Woodland
Regional Park Preserve with Tuleyome on April 15th. We hosted all 7 classes of 1st graders from Waggoner at the Preserve this month.
2. Game Cameras – getting students involved in monitoring wildlife

Kindergarteners from Woodland Prairie Elementary School listen as Education Associate Geoff Benn shows them a game camera in preparation for setting the camera up a potential otter slide at the Preserve. The students had completed a pre-trip worksheet that utilized our game camera footage and were excited to see it in action and be part of the next video.
3. Exploring Conaway Ranch

Beamer Elementary 5th graders watching turtles and other wildlife at Conaway Ranch during a field trip on April 24th. Students get to see wildlife and learn how to interpret signs of wildlife including tracks, scat, and slides. They also learn how management practices at the Ranch help provide homes and food for year-round and migratory wildlife.
4. Student presentations

Stonegate Elementary 1st graders present their ideas for a “super animal” combining different plant and animal adaptations they learned about as part of the Adaptations Trail. It’s always a delight to have students share their ideas and impressions during field trips.
Tuleyome provides free K-12 field trip programs for local schools and youth groups (e.g. Scouts) at Woodland Regional Park Preserve and Conaway Ranch. Field trips include a nature walk with binoculars and 3-5 activities related to a theme (the “Trail”) – options vary by grade level and include Adaptations, Ecosystems, Evolution, Land, Sun, Water, and Weather. If you have any questions about the field trip program or if you’d like to schedule a trip, please contact Education Associate Geoff Benn at gbenn@tuleyome.org.
