Coyote Skeletons, Crayfish, and Hiking Boots – How We Got Kids Outside in May

Maxwell Elementary School 5th graders work on assembling a coyote skeleton
We wrapped up our 2025-2026 field trip season with two great trips this month. The first was a program at Ralph Harris Park for two 5th grade classes from Rhoda Maxwell Elementary in Woodland. The program began with interactive show-and-tell stations, where students learned about animal tracking, assembled a coyote skeleton, and examined a range of plant and animal specimens. Then the students completed the Adaptations Trail, where they explored sensory adaptations through interactive activities.

Dingle Elementary 4th graders at Conaway Ranch
Our final field trip of the month was a trip to Conaway Ranch with two classes of 4th graders from Dingle Elementary in Woodland. We led the students through our new Wildlife Trail, where students learned to identify tracks and scat, built a food web of local animals, and then voted on where to set up a game camera. A highlight of the trip was encountering a large crayfish walking down the trail!

These trips close out another record-setting year for Tuleyome’s K-12 field trip program. During the 2025-2026 school year, we led 34 field trips, which served 56 classes from 17 different schools across 6 school districts. All together these trips served 1367 students, a 22% increase over the 2024-2025 school year!

In addition to our K-12 field trip program, Tuleyome also runs the Youth Boot Bank, which provides free 6-month loans of hiking boots to kids up to age 18. This month we hosted our monthly Youth Boot Bank office hours (1st Wednesday of each month 2:30 – 5:30) and added a new monthly event to our Youth Boot Bank schedule – the Davis Farmers Market (3rd Saturday of each month, 8:00 – 1:00). Stop by either event if you’d like to borrow, return, or donate boots to the program!
If you have any questions about the Youth Boot Bank, the K-12 field trip program, or if you’re interested in booking a trip for your class or youth group, please contact Education Associate Geoff Benn at gbenn@tuleyome.org.
